Jonathan Fisher, PhD Lab Director
Jonathan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology at New York Medical College. Jonathan earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania. He then performed postdoctoral work at The Rockefeller University with A. J. Hudspeth in the Laboratory of Sensory Neuroscience. He is the recipient of several awards and grants, including the Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists, an FDA / Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) Director’s Special Citation Award, the Optical Society of America’s New Focus/Bookham Award, and a Bristol-Myers Squibb Postdoctoral Fellowship in Basic Neurosciences. As an active proponent of STEM outreach, he is the founder and director of the Neurodome project, which brings real neuroimaging data into immersive environments such as planetaria and VR in order to bring cutting edge concepts in neuroscience and brain health to the public. A pianist by training, Jonathan is particularly interested in the interface between art and technology.
Current Members
YuBing (Yolanda) Shen, PhD student
Yolanda is a third-year PhD student in Dr. Fisher’s lab, majoring in cell biology. Her research focuses on exploring the mechanism of focused ultrasound by conducting in vivo animal experiment and image acquisition. In her current research, Yolanda had the opportunity to better understand neurophysiology and evaluate the effects of neuromodulation on the brain. She is looking forward to exploring more in vivo neurovascular studies. During her free time, Yolanda enjoys practicing latte art and drinking tea.
Ashlan Reid, PhD Research Fellow
Ashlan joined the Fisher lab to study the relationship between electrophysiological activity and microvascular structure in the cerebral cortex. She developed a thinned skull preparation for in vivo optical coherence tomography angiography and fluorescence imaging. She was Swartz Fellow in Theoretical Neuroscience and recipient of an NIH Re-entry Supplement award at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and The City College of New York, respectively. Ashlan is a member of the Leading Edge organization to enhance gender diversity in the life sciences, and she plans to establish an independent academic research program. She was on two collegiate waterski teams and still enjoys the sport.
Jyoti Jethe, PhD Postdoctoral Associate
Jyoti is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue her work as a Post-doc in Dr. Fisher’s lab, where she has been actively engaged for over a year now. With a background in biomedical engineering, Jyoti has focused on image processing and medical equipment development. Jyoti fells that her experience in the lab has been incredibly rewarding, allowing her to gain a deep appreciation for the scientific process and its potential to positively impact human health. Jyoti is eager to continue contributing to the lab’s projects and furthering our understanding of physiological mechanisms. In her free time, Jyoti enjoys dancing, watching action films, and cherishing quality time with dear ones
Jacob Hehir, MD PhD student Jake is in his final year of the MD-PhD program at NYMC and will be pursuing a residency position in the field of neurology. As a medical student, he recieved the Arthur Karmen award for his research on diagnostic tools for distinguishing vestibular migraines vs labyrinthitis. He joined the Fisher lab in 2021 with an interest in the auditory system and noninvasive therapies. His research focuses on using the mouse auditory cortex as a testing ground for focused ultrasound neuromodulation of sensory representation. When outside the hospital he can be found playing basketball, singing at his church, or building LEGO models of classic movies. His weaknesses are Balsam and Cedar scented Yankee candles, the current state of the San Jose Sharks hockey team, and a swift sweep of the legs.
Former Members
Iryna Gumenchuk, MD Research Associate
Dr. Gumenchuk received her MD from Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University and performed a residency in pediatrics at Lviv Regional Children’s Specialized Hospital. Her basic science research areas have included the neural mechanisms of narcolepsy, focused ultrasound, and noninvasive diffuse optical monitoring of brain function related to brain injury.
Hyounguk Jang, PhD Postdoctoral Fellow
Hyounguk is a postdoctoral fellow at NYMC, currently stationed as a Scholar in Residence at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. He was trained as a physicist in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics, and as a biomedical engineer, developed various medical devices based on hemodynamics, oximetry and electrophysiology. His current research focuses on quantitative biomarkers for traumatic brain injury (TBI).
